The Knobstone Trail gets its rugged character and name from the ridge of bluffs and knobs (hills) known as the Knobstone Escarpment.  The original trail is 42 miles. We will be hiking 3 sections of the trail.

This 3 day trip to the Knobstone Trail is an intermediate backpacking trip.  Previous backpacking experience is required.  While a moderate terrain, the trails of the Knobstone are quite strenuous.  We will plan at least one practice hike a few weeks before the trip.

The plan is to meet at the Delaney Park Campground in Scottsburg IN on Friday May 3rd around 3pm.  We will shuttle a couple of vehicles to our destination at Leota as this is a one way hike.  We will cache water at the Oxley Trailhead along the way.  Once that is done, we will set up camp, get to know each other, and work together to fix dinner.

Saturday, we will pack up early, have a quick breakfast, and then drive to the Spurgeon Trailhead where we will start our hiking adventure.  This is not a fast paced trip.  We will navigate the many hills and hollers of the Knobstone Trail (approximately 10 miles.) We will pass Oxley Memorial Trailhead and then continuing on to Elk Creek Lake where we will find a camp site for the night as well as water.  A hot supper and a nice campfire will be a nice ending to the day.

Sunday we will pack up early, eat a quick breakfast, and then continue our hike towards Leota (approximately 7 miles.)  When finished we will carpool back to Spurgeon where we will depart.  We may want to find a place to stop and eat once we are done.

The trip fee includes 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners on the trail, campsites, and other fees. Bring your own lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.  If we stop to eat after the trip the meal would be at the participant’s expense.

All trip participants must fill out and submit a CIWC Medical Form  and Long Waiver Form.
