This will be a 3-day backpacking trip for intermediate backpackers. Degree of difficulty is rated 5/5. According to Hiking Kentucky’s Red River Gorge guide. Total miles will be 14 on the Sheltowee trail. It will begin with an elevation of 1,283 feet at the trailhead descending to 750 feet. We will shuttle cars at the trailhead. This hike covers 14 miles from corner ridge trailhead in the north to pinch-em tight trailhead to the south. It contains not only some of the most rigorous hiking in the Gorge but also some of the best scenery. The route passes a number of large creeks and three of the most famous rock formations. The trail crosses the Red River over a long suspension bridge. There is dense forest along the way. We will leave the south side of Indianapolis on Friday around 9 am This will get us the Red River Gorge in plenty of time for a leisure 3-4 mile hike to set up camp. We will get up next day for a 7-8 mile hike and again set up camp for the night. In the morning we will hike out to trailhead. We will have lunch a Miguels a famous pizza hangout before heading back to Indianapolis. We should arrive back in Indianapolis around 6 pm.
This has been a favorite trip for CIWC for a number of years and is highly rated among those who have gone in the past.
